The Rockarte Festival is coming to Playa del Carmen again! Come see one of the best culturally-fused events on the Riviera Maya on Friday and Saturday, July 30th and 31st starting at 5:00pm on the beach at Zenzi and Wicky's beach blubs, 10th Street and the beach. The event is free to the public.

Rockarte is a cultural event of diverse artistic disciplines, including music, dance, art and photography, fire performers, comedic mime expressionist and more, all in an effort to raise awareness, promote and support cultural activities in Mexico.

The Rockarte festival provides a stage for local artists to showcase their talents. The festival provides an opportunity to share many forms of artistic expression and generate a new, cultural fusion-of-the-arts in society. This year the line-up will consist of many local Playa del Carmen singers, bands and artists as well as a few travelling here from Mexico City and Guadalajara to participate.

The show is every year in Playa but founding member, Luis Santana (also lead singer of one of the bands on the line-up from Guadalajara, Red Lake Circus says "the aim is to take Rockarte on the road and tour more parts of Mexico in the coming years in support of local talent in other parts of the country."

The inaugural show that took place February 28, 2009 at the hip Zenzi beach club was a huge success attended by over 1,500 people. Zenzi will host this year's festival, along with their neighbor, Wicky's, as the show expands to two days and attendance expected to increase.

If you come to the Riviera Maya and step foot in Playa, there is one thing that’s a must-see and that's a Mike Grabow show!

He's been playing all around the heart of Playa del Carmen for months now and always delivers an effortless and amazing acoustic performance. Mike's incredible voice is often compared to that of Gavin Degraw or Martin Sexton.

Mike's currently performing his original material as well as popular covers in venues on-and-around the famous 5th Avenue such as: Luna Blue, Siesta Fiesta, The Beer Bucket, Wickys, KY6 and more. You can often hear his voice from the street as you pass by when he's performing. Mike continues to expand his fan base by leaps and bounds, from the new waves of tourists that come to visit to the local people here in Playa del Carmen who catch his show several times a week. Mike continues to write new songs and develop his live performances and each show just gets better and better. Give Mike some fresh air, a little raw emotion and a guitar, and he'll show you just how good life can sound!

This past Saturday, May 29th marked the first anniversary of Caminarte. Last year this new initiative was launched to promote art and artists living in Playa del Carmen and all along the Riviera Maya. Caminarte, conceived and organized by the committee 5th Avenida Xaman Ha (in cooperation with the local municipality, the Riviera Maya Fidecomiso, the 5th Avenue Neighborhood Association, local businesses, various Hotel Associations and the Chamber of Commerce of Solidaridad) is an urban walking venue designed to provide a free exhibition space for painters, sculptors, photographers, performing artists and musicians and to increase exposure for Playa's lively and talented artistic community.

Set up along the north end of Fifth Avenue, from Constituyentes to 40th Street, the open-air exhibition is perfectly positioned to delight the throngs of tourists and locals who stroll the world-famous pedestrian boulevard every day. Local artists, both Mexican and foreign born, are invited to participate, promising a wide variety of styles, mediums and subjects. Caminarte hosts this exhibition every Thursday evening from 6pm to 11pm.

If you are visiting Playa del Carmen or anywhere along the Riviera Maya, please come and spend some time appreciating the work of these talented artists.

Twice a year Playa del Carmen's classified ads magazine, ANDALE, hosts an enormous bazaar on 5th Avenue between 34th and 40th and on 38th Street between 10th and 1st.

This past Sunday was the sixth ANDALE Bazaar. Once again, the streets were packed with vendors, shoppers and performers of all types converging on 5th Avenue with various goods for sale. There's always lots of clothing, shoes and accessories for sale–both new and used, handicrafts, plants, art, handmade jewelry, organic foods, books in different languages, creative performances, live music, and lots more! It's always great fun to see the ingenuity and creativity of the Playenses (the local Playa people).

International House was a primary sponsor of this year's bazaar and we got a great booth right in the middle of it all. IH staff at the booth handed out flyers and provided information about our school, Spanish and English classes as well as certification and other test preparation classes offered at IH. A very successful and fun-filled day and we hope to see many of the faces from the bazaar in our upcoming language classes!

Bailar es uno de los placeres de la vida… o al menos eso dice la gente a la que le encanta bailar. Bailar es muy divertido, además hay muchísimos tipos de baile, y entre todos esos uno de los más famosos en Latinoamérica: salsa

Baile tropical que nació en Cuba, ahora se escucha y se baila salsa en todo el mundo. En Playa del Carmen es un ritmo que se escucha en todas las discotecas y hasta hay lugares especializados en este género musical. Algunos de estos lugares son La Bodeguita del Medio, El Mojito Queen o Fusion donde tienen música en vivo.

Bailar salsa en alguno de estos lugares es una de las muchas cosas que debes venir hacer en Playa del Carmen y qué mejor que poder lucirte bailando después de haber tomado clases de salsa con nosotros!

Semana Santa: en estos dìas es común que haya fiestas en las iglesias de cada pueblo de México.

Las fiestas de iglesias normalmente están acompañadas por ferias. Éstas consisten en grupos de juegos mecánicos y juegos de azar que se mueven de un lugar a otro, llevando diversión a los rincones más lejanos de este país.

Aquí te puedes divertir a lo grande, con juegos de todo tipo de destrezsa, como por ejemplo; el tiro al blanco con globos [en la imagen]. El encargado del juego te da 3 dardos para lanzar, y si logras reventar tres globos, uno con cada dardo, te ganas un premio. Los premios van desde juguetes mexicanos, muñecos de peluche o alcancías.

En las ferias también hay todo tipo de comida mexicana, desde tacos hasta pozole o también dulces típicos, como las alegrías, muéganos, tamarindos o algodones de azúcar.

Hay ferias muy grandes que se celebran cada año, como la feria de San Marcos en Aguas Calientes, o ferias temáticas, como la feria de las flores en Xochimilco en Ciudad de México.

No cabe ninguna duda que las ferias mexicanas son un conjunto de colores, sabores, olores, sonrisas y alegría que hacen que se convierta en un lugar mágico y lleno de folklor.

Todos conocemos el pan, lo hemos comido de diferentes formas. Pero si te digo que en  México tenemos un pan especial para los muertos, ¿te sorprendería?

Este es el pan de muerto, elaborado a base de harina de trigo, mantequilla, azúcar leche y huevos.

El pan de Muerto está hecho especialmente para los altares que se montan el 1° y 2 de noviembre, días en que se celebran las muertes de los seres más queridos.

Este peculiar pan en forma de huesos, simula el esqueleto de la famosa Catrina que es una calavera que representa a la muerte de una forma graciosa y divertida.

Y en tu país ¿cómo celebran el día de muertos?

Todos hemos disfrutado de una buena película en el cine o en casa sentados en nuestro sillón favorito, comiendo palomitas. esto es muy común para todo el mundo, pero hacerlo en la playa no es tan común, ¿no?

Zenzi es un club de playa que tuvo la maravillosa idea de convertir la playa en un cine al aire libre donde la gente puede recostarse en los camastros y disfrutar de una muy buena película acompañada de una cerveza bien fría o un cóctel como lo hacemos nosotros con nuestros alumnos dentro del programa social.

En este lugar te recomendamos los cócteles, y bebidas como los mojitos cubanos, sex on the beach y el tequila sunrise y los siguientes platillos: el ceviche, los nachos con queso y las hamburguesas son muy buenas también.

El 15 de Septiembre se celebra el Día de la Independencia de México. Ésta es una fiesta muy importante para los mexicanos, ya que en un día como este en 1810, el cura Miguel Hidalgo tocó la campana de la iglesia de Dolores Hidalgo, declarando así el inicio de la independencia.

Hoy en día el presidente de México simula el acto, tocando la campana de dolores que ahora se encuentra en el Palacio Nacional en la Ciudad de México.

Septiembre es el mes patrio y es muy común encontrar por todo el país adornos con motivos nacionales, como son: los héroes de la independencia, la famosa campana de dolores, la bandera nacional, el escudo mexicano y muchos más.

Uno de los más bonitos adornos hecho con luces multicolores es el escudo nacional que adorna la explanada del Palacio Municipal de Playa del Carmen.
