Akumal means "land of the turtle" in Mayan, because it's a favorite place for turtles to spawn. It's 20 minutes away from Playa and a great place for a day at the beach, apart from anything else as it's usually very quiet, as you can see in our photo.
To get there, take the collectivo from 15 Avenida, on the corner of Calle 2, and ask the driver to drop you off you in Akumal (about 60 pesos for the round trip). When you get to the entrance at the "casitas de Akumal", you're there, with the beach just a 5-minute walk away…
You could just lie on the beach in Playa del Carmen, of course, but Akumal is a trip well-worth making…
