Spanish in Mexico

Nuestros estudiantes se pusieron de acuerdo para visitar las ruinas de Tulum con el tour que organiza Oscar.

Todos se lo pasaron muy bien, nuestra estudiante Genevieve nos cuenta cómo fue:

I really enjoyed our to Tulum, it was so beautiful to see the ruins and the beach. It allowed us to know more about other students from the school by spending more time all together. After Tulum, we went to Akumal to do some snorkeling and we saw turtles in the bay, it was incredible.

Paloma tells us about a popular annual event in Playa, the Ándale bazar…

El pasado domingo 18 de Mayo, nos fuimos al bazar organizado por Ándale, la revista de clasificados de Playa del Carmen. Este bazar se organiza cada año y es un evento de gran concurrencia y participación por parte de todos los que vivimos en Playa.

Más que un simple bazar, donde puedes llevar tus cosas viejas para vender, es un centro de reunión para mucha gente, ya que en Playa, siendo tan pequeño, es imposible no encontrar en eventos como éste a la gente que te encuentras en el súper, en las discos, y sobretodo ¡en la playa!

Así que junté un poco de cosas viejas que tenía, llamé a mis amigas para organizarnos y tener un pequeño espacio en el bazar y divertirnos un rato. Puedo decir que, a pesar de que el espacio en donde estuvimos el sol nunca quiso meterse y que terminamos más que bronceadas quemadas por el sol; valió la pena y nos divertimos muchísimo. Logramos tener bastantes visitantes en nuestro espacio y recaudamos un poco de dinero que después nos sirvió para irnos de compras dentro del mismo bazar. Se sentía la buena vibra de la gente, entre la música y la animación por parte del grupo artístico "20 varos".

En resumen, ¡pasamos un domingo genial en el bazar del Ándale! No te lo puedes perder el próximo año…

Gregor y Arturo manos a la obra…

Este mes tuvo lugar en IHRM una parrillada para reunir fondos y donarlos a la caridad en Playa del Carmen. Fue la primera y fue todo un éxito.

La idea fue de nuestros estudiantes y ellos mismos se encargaron de la organización. Cuando Jodi nos contó su idea, nos encantó y la animamos para que el proyecto siguiera adelante. La escuela apoyó el evento con sus instalaciones.

Jodi, nuestra estudiante, nos explica cómo fue:

"The first International House Charity BBQ was held on Wednesday, May 7th in IH Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen. Approximately 25 people attended, students, friends, teachers and family.

A simple idea for IHRM students to get to know each other and others from the Playa del Carmen community.

The evening was a success, with chef Gregor at the BBQ and Iris, Vanessa and Nicole mixing and chopping.

Thank you to everybody who helped to make this event not only successful, but fun as well! I hope to see it become a weekly event."

Capitan Tequila
Capitan Tequila (in the photo) is my favorite place for dancing at the weekends in Playa del Carmen. You meet a lot of local people, it's not very touristy and on Saturdays it has a amazing live band playing salsa and merengue. The drinks are very cheap too because there's a Happy Hour every night !

• Opening hours: Open from Wednesday to Sunday after 23:00 p.m.
• Music: Salsa, merengue, reggaeton, house
• Price: Entry 30 peso but drinks are cheap

La Perla Negra
I really like the Perla Negra. It's like a lounge. Every night there is a live salsa and merengue band. There is not too many people during the week, so it's better to go on Friday or Saturday otherwise it can be that the band plays just for you !

• Music: Salsa and merengue
• Price: Free entry / cheap drinks

Blue Parrot
Personally, I don't really like this place because it's very touristy and you don't find a lot of local people there. The music is usually the same every night… But every night at 23:00 there is the fire show and this is really amazing!

• Music: Commercial hip hop, house and reggaeton
• Price: Free entry with student ID/ drinks expensive

Santanera
The place is very tourist. If you want to go there, go on Wednesday and you will find a lot of local people. They like it there but I find the club inside a little bit dark, no space for dancing and the drinks are sooooooo expensive. The barstaff are sometimes a bit unfriendly and if you forget your ID, no chance to entry. What the Santanera does have is a great roof (sometimes closed for VIPs). But you want to go there at least once!

• Music: Electro, except on Wednesdays (funk and typical Mexican music)
• Price: Around 150 pesos/drinks VERY expensive

Bali
I like Bali, it's a nice place but quite expensive and you must love electro music otherwise you are totally lost there. It has a lot of tourist people but you find some locals too !

Having got to know Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Mérida a little, our students made these posters in class with their teacher Arturo Durán.

A Arturo Pérez-Reverte se le ocurrió escribir esta novela cuando escuchó el corrido llamado "Contrabando y traición" (conocido también como "Camelia La Texana"), de Los Tigres del Norte.

La novela plasma sin juicios, de manera muy clara, el mundo del narcotráfico en México, Sur de España y Marruecos.
