Spanish in Mexico

Una característica de México, es sin duda su gran colorido lleno de vida. Sus colores están en todas partes, en los vestidos típicos de cada estado, en su comida, y en sus artesanías. Por ejemplo en la cerámica que se encuentra en cada rincón del país, por ejemplo dando un paseo por la 5ta avenida aquí en Playa del Carmen o en sus muchas zonas arqueológicas que se encuentran en toda la Riviera Maya.

Estas artesanías son elaboradas y decoradas por manos mexicanas, en cada una de estas piezas puedes encontrar diferentes imágenes y dibujos, siempre una diferente de la otra. Hay platos, vasos, jarras, incluso ceniceros y hasta cráneos de cerámica, que con sus divertidos diseños parecen estar felices y llenas de vida.

La cerámica mexicana es un lindo recuerdo para llevarte y decorar tu casa o bien para hacer un lindo regalo a alguien de la familia o un buen amigo.

This past Saturday, May 29th marked the first anniversary of Caminarte. Last year this new initiative was launched to promote art and artists living in Playa del Carmen and all along the Riviera Maya. Caminarte, conceived and organized by the committee 5th Avenida Xaman Ha (in cooperation with the local municipality, the Riviera Maya Fidecomiso, the 5th Avenue Neighborhood Association, local businesses, various Hotel Associations and the Chamber of Commerce of Solidaridad) is an urban walking venue designed to provide a free exhibition space for painters, sculptors, photographers, performing artists and musicians and to increase exposure for Playa's lively and talented artistic community.

Set up along the north end of Fifth Avenue, from Constituyentes to 40th Street, the open-air exhibition is perfectly positioned to delight the throngs of tourists and locals who stroll the world-famous pedestrian boulevard every day. Local artists, both Mexican and foreign born, are invited to participate, promising a wide variety of styles, mediums and subjects. Caminarte hosts this exhibition every Thursday evening from 6pm to 11pm.

If you are visiting Playa del Carmen or anywhere along the Riviera Maya, please come and spend some time appreciating the work of these talented artists.

Nos gustaría regresar a International House Riviera Maya porque el clima es muy bueno aquí en Playa del Carmen, también aquí aprendí muchas cosas en la escuela y es muy bueno que aquí podemos hacer de todo; gramática, conversaciones de cosas que nos interesan y pienso que eso es muy importante para los alumnos.

Me gusta esta escuela porque que hay muchas actividades y eso es muy bueno para los estudiantes, y todos los días existe la posibilidad de hacer alguna actividad diferente en el programa social.

El programa social es muy interesante, las actividades que más nos gustaron fueron las clases de cocina, porque es muy interesante aprender a cocinar comida mexicana y podemos experimentar con sabores nuevos y diferentes además podemos conocer las recetas de la comida mexicana. También nos gusta mucho el coctel que se hace todos los viernes por la noche porque los mojitos que bebemos ahí son los mejores de todo Playa del Carmen. Bueno todas las actividades del programa social son buenas porque son gratis.

También podemos decir que las clases son muy buenas porque son en pequeños grupos y eso las hace más divertidas y así podemos aprender más.

El contacto entre los profesores y los estudiantes es muy bueno. Los profesores de International House son muy amables y responsables con los estudiantes. Todos aquí son muy divertidos, nos caen muy bien.

Coco's Cat Rescue is a local rescue charity focusing on feral cats and the care and rehousing of rescued kittens in a permanent, loving home. Coco's is a non-profit organization with a no-kill policy, dedicated to reducing and controlling the cat population in Playa del Carmen.

Coco's is also committed to education to encourages responsible pet ownership and fervently challenges the negative association with feral cats and consequent cruelty. Coco's long term mission is to greatly increase the number of animals that they’re able to assist and expand their model to embrace other local areas in need of their services.

The clinic is operating out of the MEDIVET clinic, on a part-time basis: Tuesday through Sunday from 10AM to 2PM until the new clinic building is ready. Thanks to this new facility, Coco's will also be able to assist dog owners or organizations in need of dog sterilization as well.

Coco's Cat Rescue has a volunteer staff and network of foster families led by founder, Laura Jonguitud Raikes, a Playa del Carmen resident.

Twice a year Playa del Carmen's classified ads magazine, ANDALE, hosts an enormous bazaar on 5th Avenue between 34th and 40th and on 38th Street between 10th and 1st.

This past Sunday was the sixth ANDALE Bazaar. Once again, the streets were packed with vendors, shoppers and performers of all types converging on 5th Avenue with various goods for sale. There's always lots of clothing, shoes and accessories for sale–both new and used, handicrafts, plants, art, handmade jewelry, organic foods, books in different languages, creative performances, live music, and lots more! It's always great fun to see the ingenuity and creativity of the Playenses (the local Playa people).

International House was a primary sponsor of this year's bazaar and we got a great booth right in the middle of it all. IH staff at the booth handed out flyers and provided information about our school, Spanish and English classes as well as certification and other test preparation classes offered at IH. A very successful and fun-filled day and we hope to see many of the faces from the bazaar in our upcoming language classes!

Bailar es uno de los placeres de la vida… o al menos eso dice la gente a la que le encanta bailar. Bailar es muy divertido, además hay muchísimos tipos de baile, y entre todos esos uno de los más famosos en Latinoamérica: salsa

Baile tropical que nació en Cuba, ahora se escucha y se baila salsa en todo el mundo. En Playa del Carmen es un ritmo que se escucha en todas las discotecas y hasta hay lugares especializados en este género musical. Algunos de estos lugares son La Bodeguita del Medio, El Mojito Queen o Fusion donde tienen música en vivo.

Bailar salsa en alguno de estos lugares es una de las muchas cosas que debes venir hacer en Playa del Carmen y qué mejor que poder lucirte bailando después de haber tomado clases de salsa con nosotros!

Uno de los días festivos más importantes para los mexicanos es el 10 de mayo, el día de las madres. Un día en que todas las mamás de México son festejadas. Sus hijos o esposos normalmente llevan a su mamá a comer o cenar a un restaurante, le regalan flores o le preparan alguna comida especial en casa, también es normal llevarles serenata con mariachis por la madrugada y cantarles las mañanitas.

Nosotros en International House Riviera Maya no fuimos la excepción en celebrar el día de las madres y les regalamos un pastel a las mamás que forman parte de esta escuela y por supuesto también a todas las alumnas que son madres y que se encuentran estudiando con nosotros.

Sin duda alguna no pudieron faltar las mañanitas cantadas por todo el staff de IH.

¿Cómo celebran el día de las madres en tu país?

Just a block up from the beach, at the end of Calle 38 Norte, you will find another incredibly beautiful place called El jardin de Shangri-la. As you enter the gardens, you feel calm descend on you as you as the energy of this very spiritual place ignites your spirit. This area is surrounded by nature and as you travel along the sandy paths, you will discover different palapa huts which serve as yoga and meditation rooms.

Temazcal baths are said to be a spiritual, physical and mental cleansing experience.

Muy cerca de Playa del Carmen se encuentra el Estado de Yucatán, donde puedes encontrar lugares mágicos, como los pueblos de Valladolid y Tizimin o las ruinas de Chichen Itzá, que ahora es reconocida como una de las nuevas Siete Maravillas del Mundo.

Pero el lugar que hoy te vamos a recomendar es Rio Lagartos, un pequeño pueblo en la costa del Golfo de México. Este lugar cuenta con una reserva de la biosfera natural, donde puedes ver una gran variedad de aves pescadoras, lagartos y  un santuario de flamencos rosas (en la foto).
